Women’s golf takes home individual tournament title

At the Nanea Pac-12 Preview in Kona, Hawaii, the Trojans played with a depleted staff of only sophomore Robynn Ree, freshman Allisen Corpuz and senior Elizabeth Doty, yet came out victorious. Ree took home the individual title at the Preview. The three Trojans competed as individuals and not as a team because of their missing players. Seniors Victoria Morgan, Gabriella Then, Tiffany Chan and Karen Chung were away at the LPGA’s Q school. Chan and Chung advanced to the third and final round. The Pac-12 Preview is the final tournament of the fall season.

Ree was looking for her second collegiate win. Six holes into the final round, Ree was in second place at -3 overall, Corpuz fell to tied for 19th and Doty stayed tied for 43rd. With 10 holes to go, Ree tied for first again with a birdie. Five holes later Ree would have pars on 4 and 5 and a birdie on 3, ahead by 2 at -5. She would remain in first place for the remainder of the tournament.

Going into the final hole Ree led by 2 shots. She clinched Nanea Pac 12 Preview at -6 for a 2-stroke win over UCLA’s Mariel Galdiano (-4) and Stanford’s Albane Valenzuela (-3). Corpuz finished tied for 13th at 3-over and Doty finished 49th overall at 18-over.

The tournament serves as a homecoming for Corpuz, who is from Honolulu. The first round of the tournament consisted of 36 holes. Through the first four holes, Ree was tied for 14th, Corpuz tied for 25th and Doty tied for 35th.

Through 13 holes, Corpuz stood at -2 and within a stroke of first. One hole later, Corpuz was tied for first at -3 with five birdies so far. At the end of the first round, Ree and Corpuz were tied for 4th at -3, two strokes back, and Doty was tied for 40th at +5. After eight holes in the 2nd round Ree stood at tied for second with -4 and Corpuz stood at tied for 5th at -3 after six holes.

Ree had four birdies in each round of play with her best rounds being the first round and the final round as she finished at -3 for both. She was even in the second round. Arizona State won the team title at the Pac-12 Preview.

The women’s golf team does not return until the spring season.
